A passion for blending and sourcing quality wines, Martin Szakal aims to select either finished wines to suit the quality parameters demanded by the brand or chooses unfinished parcels of wines and blends, fines or finishes wines to meet his expectations.
The Cuvee Grand
A Non-Vintage Sparkling wine with it's origins in Victoria. It is a classic style utilising a Chardonnay base with a little Pinot Noir. To add complexity to the wine we have found some older Pinot Noir base wine which enhances the depth of flavour and overall structure.
The palate of the wine is a medium weight melding of typical Champagne like characters. These include strikingly refreshing crispness followed by an explosive fine mousse that fills your mouth, with an intertwined flavour profile of citrus, honeydew melon, brioche and a hint of blanched almond.
It is certainly a wine to be enjoyed when looking to celebrate in style. Relax and enjoy the company of someone special, or share it with likeminded Champage aficionados.
Petit Blanc
White wines of the highest class are produced with a single purpose in mind from the outset. The viticultural practices are key to producing the highest quality fruit which is then met by a dedicated oenologist who nurtures the essential and pristine charcters through to bottling. We will call ours, no matter the origin, or grape variety, Petit Blanc. However, both the former will fearure on the label.
Grand Rouge or "Big Red" is a deceptive name for this wine, where our focus is on big flavour rather than big tannins or high alcohol. The essence of Grand Rouge is taking the best wines we can source to craft an exceptional wine of the highest calibre. One of the key words that Martin&Co. uses to describe successful wines is "vitality". A wine which exudes vigour and energy will appeal to us; we are in search of purity and concentration in all components.
Our 2009 Grand Rouge Central Victoria Cabernet Shiraz 55/45 has just been released and is some how better than we expected. This wine has taken 12 months to finalise with over 200 wine samples being scrutinised before any wines were decided on. After bench trials suggesting 5 possible candidates, we decided on only two due to the way these two wines truly resonated with each other providing the experience that we long for. The incredible intensity and vitality without high alcohol, over ripeness or intense tannins. This wine does offer some bold tannin structure however it is generated from ripe fruit tannin expressed by the seeds and quality new American Oak. Currently a satin experience that will soon move to a silky prestige ride. In time this wine will truly sing a very very sweet tune indeed.
In line with our style, we have created a wine to be consumed now or to be cellared for up to 10 years. Pristine fruit flavors and quality fine oak are all expressed in Grand Rouge.
